Types of Abuse: Emotional

 

Emotional abuse, also called psychological abuse or mental abuse, is the second most common form of abuse. Emotional abuse is defined as, by www.healthyplace.com, “any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth.”

Here are some signs, symptoms, and examples of emotional abuse:

  • Yelling or swearing at you (read about: Emotional Bullying)
  • Name calling, insults, and/or mocking
  • Threatening death, violence or abandonment
  • Intimidating you
  • Ignoring or excluding you
  • Isolating you i.e. not allowing you to be with and/or be in contact with your friends and family, forcing you to stay in the house while they are gone, keeping you from making new friends, monitoring your online presence in order to keep you from talking to other people
  • Humiliating you in public or behind closed doors
  • Denial of the abuse and blaming of the victim
  • Goes above and beyond to keep control of you
  • Intentionally frightens you
  • Making you fear that they will not receive the food or care they need
  • Lying
  • Makes derogative or slanderous statements about you to others
  • Withholding important information
  • Demeaning you for simple things such as the language you speak, what you wear, how you walk, etc
  • Telling you that you are too much trouble
  • Excessive criticizing
  • Being over-familiar and disrespectful
  • Unreasonably ordering you around as if you can’t do anything on your own; treating an individual like a servant or child
